Buying Marijuana Seeds in Australia

Just like many other places around the world, Australia’s marijuana laws are currently in a state of flux.

Medical marijuana has been legal in this country (with certain limitations) since 2016, yet recreational marijuana is not.

The fact is, marijuana is widely used in Australia, despite the country’s reluctance to legalize it.

Many wait for the day when recreational marijuana (and growing marijuana from seeds in Australia) is not just common, but also legal.

Although recreational growing is frowned upon, there are certain states where growing one or two plants will not send you to jail for two years.

Several states place an active emphasis on treatment rather than criminal charges, making growing less risky.

Of course, anyone growing commercial amounts of marijuana is going to face penalties that are far harsher than just growing one plant. That’s why you should keep your garden small.

Marijuana growing laws in Australia

In several states, such as South Australia, the way you grow marijuana plants matters as well.

For example, growing “artificially” (hydroponically and indoors) is a greater offense than merely growing your plants outdoors.

So, to face the lowest possible penalty (which could be as low as $100 – $300), stick to growing one plant outdoors in states with decriminalized marijuana.

Despite the decriminalization of the possession of small amounts of marijuana in certain states, growing marijuana plants is still illegal in every Australian state.

It’s important to note that, because the laws around marijuana change so frequently, this information could soon be out of date.

Marijuana Possession Laws per Australian State

Below are the exact laws for possession (which are usually the same laws as for cultivation) in each Australian state.

Northern Territory

Marijuana possession is essentially decriminalized here.

If you’re in possession of 50 grams or less of marijuana, or if you are growing two plants or less (non-hydroponically), you’ll receive a $200 fine. Possession of cannabis seeds falls under agricultural guidelines.

You may receive a diversion instead of a criminal charge. This can only happen once per person.

So, if you are a repeat offender, it does not apply to you. It also will not apply if you have more than 50 grams of marijuana in your possession.

New South Wales

Instead of a criminal charge, you could receive a caution, as long as you have 15 grams or less. You can receive up to two cautions.

This state is even more lenient than neighboring New South Wales. It allows up to two cautions for amounts up to 50 grams.

This island state allows for three cautions within any ten-year period. This applies only if you are in possession of 50 grams or less.

South Australia

Instead of a caution, offenders of their simple possession law could get a fine (between $50 and $150) for any amount of marijuana up to 100 grams, or any amount of hash up to 20 grams.

Western Australia

Marijuana possession is officially decriminalized here.

If you are caught with 10 grams or less (or growing a single plant, or in possession of used paraphernalia), then you can opt for a Cannabis Intervention Session rather than a criminal charge.

Australian Capital

The ACT has had a civil penalty system since the year 1993, so they’re even more ahead of the game than other states.

Anyone in possession of 25 grams or less of marijuana or found growing 2 plants or less (non-hydroponically), will get a $100 fine.

This fine must be paid within two months or they will need to attend a treatment program instead.

Buying Weed Seeds in Aussie

If you have done the proper research into the lowest penalties are and are ready to start growing marijuana, it’s probably time to start thinking about strains and buying seeds.

Because you cannot legally sell cannabis seeds in the country of Australia, your best bet is to find a company that will ship reliably and discreetly to your location.

It’s rather far away from a lot of companies (especially those in Western Europe), but there are a few that reliable ship down under.

FAQs About Buying Marijuana Seeds in Australia

Although recreational use of marijuana remains illegal federally, the Australian Capital territory passed a bill to make ACT the first region in Australia to legalize marijuana for personal use as of 31 January 2020.

Medicinal marijuana was legalized in Australia federally on 24th of February of 2016.

Weed Seeds Australia 2021 Guide

Millions of Australians appreciate cannabis for its medicinal effects, so it’s not surprising that interest in growing this plant keeps increasing all over the country. If this sounds like something you’d like to do, keep reading to find out all you need to know about buying weed seeds in Australia in 2021.

Buying marijuana seeds in Australia: laws & options

Changes in Australian legislation took place in 2016, when a new law approved growing cannabis seeds for scientific or medicinal purposes. Laws regarding cannabis possession and seed growth were passed three years later in 2019, but only in the Australian Capital Territory area.

As of January 2020, anyone found in possession of one or two plants can be charged with an offence under the Drugs of Dependence Act. But there are some age based exceptions to this. For example, the act allows individuals who are over 18 years old to cultivate two plants, up to a maximum of four plants per household.

The latest change came in 2021 with the introduction of the Cannabis Legalisation Bill 2021, which only applies to New South Wales. Among other things, this law regulates the sales of cannabis products in this state.

However, legislation on growing and buying seeds is still complex. At the time of writing, buying marijuana seeds for recreational purposes is still illegal in Australia.

Buying domestic

If you’re keen on buying domestic, here’s the situation. On the plus side, getting your cannabis seeds from an Australian seed bank means you may receive them faster, and you won’t spend too much on shipping.

However, the main challenge is finding a local seed bank that meets all the criteria for success. By this, we mean a seed bank that sells weed seeds with a high germination rate and with decent yields. The main problem is that as big as the country is, there isn’t much choice available within Australia when it comes to suppliers, so you may only have access to a handful of strains.

Buying online (Importing cannabis seeds)

Again, choosing the right seed bank is the key. Look for an online supplier who is familiar with the characteristics of Australian weather, such as extreme heat, cold, and humidity. Check that they offer seeds that can do well in this climate, especially since outdoor growing is popular because it’s less of an issue in legal terms.

You should also bear in mind that shipping and delivery will take longer, so always plan in advance to make sure the seeds arrive during planting season.

Moreover, getting the seeds into the country without being held by customs can be challenging. We recommend finding an online seed bank that has experience shipping to Australia and has done so successfully before. Otherwise, your seed package may never get to you!

Is it illegal to buy (medical) cannabis seeds in Australia?

In the Australian Capital Territory, it’s legal to buy medicinal weed seeds from approved suppliers. But it must be noted that this does not apply in other Australian states. This is a breakdown of the situation state by state on cannabis in general:

New South Wales

You may receive a caution if found to have up to 15 grams. You can only get two cautions.

Northern Territory

There is a $200 fine for anyone found with up to 50 grams of marijuana or cultivating up to 2 plants.

No criminal charges (but a diversion) if you are found with less than 50 grams of marijuana. But you can only escape criminal charges once.

South Australia

Fines for having under 100 grams of marijuana go from $50 to $150.

For amounts under 50 grams, Tasmania applies up to three cautions in a ten-year period.

You may receive up to two cautions as long as you’re not found to have more than 50 grams.

Western Australia

The limit to avoid criminal charges is having or growing less than 10 grams of weed. However, if caught, you will be asked to attend a Cannabis Intervention Session.

We encourage everyone to make their own decisions and be discreet when buying seeds to be grown in Australia.

Buy Cannabis Seeds Australia checklist

There are several things you should check before buying weed seeds from Australia. Here are four important things to add to your checklist.

1. Find a suitable supplier

This is the first and most important step, since finding a reliable supplier can prevent many problems that are usually the result of ordering from an iffy supplier. To find a trustworthy supplier, you will need to do some research on your side, but trust us when we say that this is worth the effort!

So, here are some tips on what to look for when trying to find a suitable supplier:

  • Check their website or contact their customer service department to see if they have experience shipping to Australia.
  • Read reviews and testimonials from previous customers. If possible, try to find reviews from other customers in Australia. Bonus if they’re also in your state! Usually, you can find reviews in the seed bank’s website, but for additional peace of mind, you will want to check independent reviews, for example on well-known review sites like Trustpilot or in specialized online forums.
  • Check that you can pay for your order using your preferred payment method. Some people prefer bank transfers, others are used to paying by card, and we can’t forget that cryptocurrency is gaining popularity among many people who don’t want their payments being tracked.
  • Also, if the supplier is outside Australia, check if any fees apply to international payments.

2. Check policies and guarantees

We understand that you can’t wait to have your seeds in your hands and ready to plant. But it’s important to spend some time reading the seed bank’s policies in detail. The main reason to do this is to know what to expect if things go wrong.

A reliable supplier should list their terms and conditions in their website. We recommend reading their policies regarding refunds and shipping. You’ll also want to know what’s the supplier’s stance if a package gets lost – reshipment should be an option. And before ordering, make sure you understand the supplier’s germination and delivery guarantees.

To sum up, read their policies and ask yourself if they’re written to offer customers a smooth experience.

3. Select a strain

When selecting which strain to buy, it’s important to decide where and how it will be grown. For example, some strains are more likely to thrive outdoors under intense heat or humidity. If you’re or can’t grow them outdoors or in greenhouses, you may want to look into cannanis seeds that produce compact buds.

It’s also worth remembering that Australian law differentiates between growing conditions. Cultivating in artificial conditions such as indoor lighting or hydroponics is considered a more serious offence than having an outdoor crop.

Generally speaking, we recommend going for autoflowering weed seeds, as these are more resistant to extreme weather conditions and to mold, fungus, or pests.

We know it can be daunting to read through dozens of strain descriptions, especially if you’ve never grown your own cannabis before. Here are 3 strains we recommend for Australian growers, and which you can find in our online seed bank.

is known as one of the best weed strains to reduce anxiety and improve ADHD symptoms. This Sativa-dominant variety carries 19% THC and 0.4% CBD. This is a beginner-friendly strain that is ready for harvest in approximately 10 weeks. is loved by growers in Europe and North America, so it’s only a matter of time before it gets a fan base among Australian growers too. This is a potent Sativa-dominant strain similar in THC – CBD ratio to Jack Herer. Blue Dream flowers in under 2 months in Mediterranean, tropical and arid climates typical in some parts of Australia.

4. Purchase and wait

After you’ve selected the right strain, it’s only a matter of buying it and waiting for it to be delivered. You can pay using your preferred payment method, and you should receive confirmation of purchase soon after, usually via e-mail.

When it comes to shipping, a reputable seed bank will give you the option to track and trace your package, so you can check where your seeds are every step of the way.

Bear in mind that shipping times to Australia are notoriously long when compared to other parts of the world, and even more so since 2020 due to lower numbers of commercial routes and mail processing backlogs.

Australian Marijuana Seeds − Buying Guide

Getting ripped off is never nice…

And because yours truly has been taken for a ride once or twice…

I’ll save you the pain by telling you how to buy marijuana seeds online without making the typical newbie mistakes.

If There Are Few Payment Options, Beware…

When buying weed seeds, you should look for a seed bank that offers secure payment options such as credit cards, PayPal, or Bitcoin. Some seed banks may offer discounts for payments made via wire transfer, but this payment type may take longer to process.

ILGM accepts a wide variety of payment methods to make your purchase as secure and convenient as possible.

Trusted Cannabis Seedbanks Have Strict Safety Protocols

When you purchase weed seeds online, you want to ensure the Australian seedbank takes security seriously.

Apart from the brand reputation, one way to tell if a site is secure is to look for the SSL encryption symbol. This padlock symbol means that the site’s connection is encrypted and your personal information remains private.

Stealth Shipping to Avoid Customs Seizing your Seeds

If you don’t want your precious seeds to be seized by customs…

Then I’m sure you’ve heard about “stealth shipping”.

To make sure your shipment arrives safe and sound, we recommend going for websites that specifically mention stealth shipping, such as Crop Kind Seeds. Besides using plain, unmarked packaging, the site also takes extra precautions to make sure your packages don’t get stolen or damaged.

And by the way, it goes without saying but…

Always make sure that the online seed bank ships to Australia before placing an order. In other words − don’t buy when you’re high ;).

Delivery and Germination Guarantees = Fewer Headaches

There’s nothing worse than ordering 10 or 20 seeds, only to find out they will never arrive.

Or actually, there is something worse.

And that’s to take the time and effort to grow your seeds − only to find out they just won’t germinate.

That’s why delivery and germination guarantees are important when choosing a reputable seed bank. No effort in the world will make up for low-quality seeds.

Don’t Fall For Cheap Strains

If you’re new to the biz, you may be fooled by cheap “feminized” seed strains.

But what you don’t know…

Is that many of these feminized seeds will actually turn out male, or herm really bad.

In other words, your harvest will be this: 0.

(Yes, zero. Zilch. Nada)

So if you don’t want to get a total dud plant, I suggest sticking to the most popular seed strains, such as the ones you can find on Mediseed Man.

Is Their Customer Support Stuck in the 1950s?

Ever had a problem and contacted customer support, only to get an answer 2 weeks later? Well, if that happens while growing… all your seeds will be dead by then

If you ever need a hand, great websites such as Mary Jane’s Garden offer live chat support − so you can get help right away, and (hopefully) in time to save your little babies.

In case you haven’t read a single word I wrote…

Basically, while you could get your buds growing with any of the excellent seed banks we’ve mentioned − I Love Growing Marijuana is one of the most trusted names in the industry, and their huge variety of cannabis strains and growing kits definitely makes them stand out.

And if you go for a bank that’s not featured on this list…

Well, there are no words except “good luck, mate”.
