How to Make CBD MCT Oil

MCT oil is a healthy cooking medium used in many recipes. MCT stands for ‘medium-chain triglycerides’, these are the compounds that give oils their beneficial properties. The reason they are so beneficial is they can be metabolized quickly and are almost immediately bioavailable to the body. Therefore when infused with CBD, it allows for faster absorption into the body compared to other methods. This brings on the medicinal and therapeutic properties of CBD much faster. This beginner guide will teach you how to make CBD MCT oil and how to calculate the potency of it.

We recommend you scroll to the bottom of this post before you make the recipe. At the bottom, you will find a potency calculator for the CBD MCT oil. Play around with the calculator until you find a dosage that fits your preferences. Then you will know exactly how much of each ingredient you need for the infusion.

Here is What You’ll Need

To make CBD MCT oil, there are only two ingredients the recipe calls for. The main ingredient you won’t be able to purchase at the grocery store. That ingredient is CBD isolate. CBD isolate is simple to use and very affordable. If you would like to purchase isolate or read more information on it, here is the company we have been using:

The only other ingredient needed for the recipe is MCT oil. You can buy organic MCT oil on Amazon – click here to learn more. There is also some equipment you will need.

CBD MCT Oil Potency Guide

We recommend that you calculate the potency of the CBD MCT oil prior to making it. This will allow you to adjust the recipe until you find a dosage that fits your preferences. To calculate the potency of each recipe you make, you must know the potency of the infused-MCT oil. Furthermore, if you know the MCT oils potency, you can determine how many mg of CBD are in each portion of the recipe.

Infusion Machines Make Edibles For You!

Decarboxylating and infusing your cannabis edibles can take a lot of time and effort. Luckily, there are great infusion devices to make this process as easy and seamless as possible. Cannabis-infusion machines are countertop devices that decarboxylate and infuse your butter, oils, and other ingredients for you. With just a few clicks you will have cannabis edibles at your disposal!

We recommend LEVO Infusion Machines and Ardent Cannabis Infusion Machines, which are two of the most widely used devices on the market. Use code CANNASCHOOL at checkout for 10% OFF!

To calculate the potency, you will need to measure the amount of CBD isolate used in the infusion. The CBD isolate package may have guidelines and directions for how to measure and dose it. To measure the amount of CBD used in each recipe we make, we use a digital scale. CBD is measured in milligrams (mg), so if the scale reads 0.1g (grams) that is equivalent to 100mg.

We recommend that you aim to use approximately 0.5 grams of CBD isolate per cup of MCT oil, which is equivalent to 500mg of CBD per cup. At the bottom of this article, we made a potency calculator to help you find a dosage you want! Do this prior to making the infused-MCT oil so you know precisely how much CBD isolate and oil to add!

If you need a digital scale to measure the CBD isolate for the infusion, this is the scale we recommend: here is a link to the scale we use which can be purchased on Amazon!

Cannabis tinctures and oils can be made with grain alcohol, MCT oil, coconut oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, almond oil, canola oil, palm oil, avocado oil, and many more. Learn how to make your very own cannabis tincture in the comfort of your own home with our simple methods for CBD, and THC tinctures.

These recipes use MCT oil and there is also a method for both CBD and THC grain alcohol tinctures below the MCT tincture recipes.

How to Make a Cannabis Tincture: Equipment Needed

The equipment needed to make these tinctures is incredibly easy to find. The 35ml droppers are found at pharmacies of health food stores.

  • 35ml Dropper (Found in Pharmacies)
  • Large Pyrex-Style Measuring Cup/Jug
  • Slow Cooker (Can Also Be Done on Stovetop)
  • Cheesecloth
  • Mason Jar (For Storing Extra Tincture That Won’t Fit In Dropper)

Cannabis tinctures have become valuable medicine for many. Making your own cannabis tincture empowers the cannabis consumer to explore a dosage, method, and carrier oil that suits you specifically.

How to Make a Cannabis Tincture: Ingredients

As mentioned, both CBD and THC tinctures will be covered and the ingredients vary slightly for each tincture.

CBD Tincture:

  • A gram of CBD isolate
  • 350 ml of carrier substance (MCT oil, grain alcohol, grapeseed oil, vinegar etc.)

THC Tincture:

  • 10 grams of cannabis

How to Make CBD Isolate Tincture With MCT Oil

Using CBD isolate in a tincture does not require decarboxylation because this substance has already experienced this process through extraction. At 99% cannabidiol, CBD isolate is a strong substance, suitable for medical use.

Just 1 gram of CBD isolate will contain 990mg+ of CBD in total and 1 gram is all that is needed to make this CBD tincture. Although CBD isolate is harder to come by than most cannabis flower, this type of tincture can become an incredibly convenient way to ingest CBD on a regular basis.

This tincture can be made with grain alcohol, vinegar, and other oils such as grapeseed, MCT, etc.

For this CBD tincture recipe, MCT oil will be used.

  • In the glass bowl or measuring jug, add CBD isolate and MCT oil
  • Fill the crockpot with enough water to reach the halfway point of your measuring cup/jug
  • Place crockpot/slow cooker on medium-low heat and wait until the water has heated
  • Now, place the measuring cup of CBD and oil into the water within the crockpot/slow cooker
  • You can cover this infusion, although it is not necessary.
  • Ensure the water does not get too low during the infusion process, some water will evaporate
  • Leave in the crockpot/slow cooker for 3-4 hours
  • Stir every hour or so
  • Line a hand strainer with cheesecloth (3-4 pieces on top of one another) and strain the oil into a mason jar
  • Once cooled, fill the dropper and store the remaining tincture in a dark and cool place within an airtight mason jar
  • Store safely away from pets and children
  • The dropper provides an incredibly convenient option to consume CBD regularly

That is all that is takes to make 10 droppers’ worth of CBD tincture. Although CBD isolate can sometimes reach $75-$90 per gram, this is usually around the same price as two CBD tinctures.

Cannabis tinctures are incredibly easy to make at home as well as being far less expensive than store-bought tinctures.

With this recipe, ten 35ml bottles of CBD tinctures can be made for the (approximate) price of two.

How to Make a THC Cannabis Tincture With MCT Oil

The method for a THC cannabis tincture is similar to the CBD tincture, however, decarboxylation is required when using raw cannabis in infusions. Decarboxylation can be achieved with several different methods (mason jar, sous vide etc). Decarboxylation is a necessary process when using cannabis flower material in infusions and oils.

With that being said, here is our easy method for a THC tincture made with MCT oil:

  • In the glass bowl or measuring jug, add decarboxylated cannabis and MCT oil
  • Fill the crockpot with enough water to reach the halfway point of your measuring cup/jug
  • Place crockpot/slow cooker on medium-low heat and wait until the water has heated
  • Now, place the measuring cup of decarboxylated cannabis and MCT oil into the water within the crockpot/slow cooker
  • You can cover this infusion, although it is not necessary.
  • Ensure the water does not get too low during the infusion process, some water will evaporate
  • Leave in the crockpot/slow cooker for 3-4 hours
  • Stir every hour or so
  • Line a hand strainer with cheesecloth (3-4 pieces on top of one another) and strain the cannabis-infused MCT oil into a mason jar
  • Once cooled, fill the dropper and store the remaining tincture in a dark and cool place within an airtight mason jar
  • Store safely away from pets and children
  • The dropper provides an incredibly convenient option to consume THC regularly

What can be done with a cbd tincture made from grain alcohol…mine has a real strong taste or bite to it. Can I make a gummie or cook it or add it to a drink?

You can definitely add it to your food or drinks if it has a strong taste – Adding to tea/coffee is the easiest in my opinion

It worked! Thank you…and now for my next question, if you make an mct oil infused version do you still store it the 10 to 30 days before you can use it?

you can use the MCT oil tincture right away! apologies for the late response

If you make the mct oil version, how long after before you can use it? The alcohol version you wait 10 to 30 days but it says nothing about that in your mct recipe.
