Are Four T8 Fluorescent Tubes Good for Growing Vegetables?
With the help of T8 fluorescent lights, you can have fresh vegetables year-round. You will need to use four fluorescent tubes, however, to provide enough light for these sun-loving plants to thrive on a covered patio or indoors. They must also be the right type of T8 fluorescent bulb and they must be placed at the proper distance from the plants.
Fluorescent light is made up of various rays that fall into blue, orange, red or yellow-green color spectrums. Cool-white and warm-white fluorescent bulbs put out light with plenty of blue, orange and yellow-green light, but they do not put out enough red for vegetable plants. Balanced, full-spectrum, natural or grow bulbs marketed specifically for plants provide plenty of red light in addition to the other color spectrums.
Bigger is not Always Better
Newer fluorescent light bulbs have a smaller diameter, are more efficient and produce more light. T8 bulbs are newer fluorescent bulbs that are 1 inch in diameter. Four T8 bulbs are ideal for growing vegetables.
A combination of cool- or warm-white T8 fluorescent bulbs, and T8 full-spectrum or grow bulbs can be used to provide sufficient light in all of the spectrums. Cool- and warm-white bulbs are less expensive than full-spectrum bulbs. Using two cool- or warm-white bulbs and two full-spectrum bulbs will save money and provide the right type of light.
Reflectors on the top and back of the light fixture will increase the amount of light that reaches the vegetables. Many fixtures designed to provide light for plants have a reflective top surface. Shiny aluminum foil can be placed above the light bulbs and behind the plants, though, to create a reflector if the fixture does not already have one. Adjust the fixture to maintain a distance of 6 inches between the tops of the vegetables and the T8 light bulbs. Turn the lights on in the morning when the sun comes up and leave them on for 18 hours each day. The easiest way to accomplish this is by plugging the fixture into a timer. For best results, grow the vegetables in front of a south-facing window so they will get natural light in addition to the artificial light.
