8 Creative Ways to Use Your Stems

I f there’s one thing every stoner seems to have, it’s a stock-pile of stems left over from buds gone by. Rather than waste any part of the plant, many of us hang onto them in hopes of finding the perfect use for left-over marijuana stems.

Brew Tea (or Hot Cocoa)

Tea is a popular choice for a quick use of stems. It can be made with water (for flavor only) or a high-fat liquid like coconut oil or half-and-half (which will absorb the cannabinoids so you can get high). To make stem tea, decarboxylate your stems then grind them and wrap in a coffee filter/DIY tea bag. Simmer on low heat for a minimum of seven minutes then mix with your favorite tea or hot cocoa.

Make Your Own Topicals

Marijuana topicals are becoming increasingly popular thanks to their amazing therapeutic potential. With a few stems and basic supplies, you can make your own at home. Just use a basic marijuana topical recipe then add your choice of skin-friendly vitamins and essential oils. Peppermint, eucalyptus and lavender, for example, are excellent pain relievers, too.

Make a Hemp Wick

For those who want to avoid butane fumes when smoking off of a pipe, hemp wicks can be an excellent solution. To make your own hemp wick, strip long stems or left-over stalks using a sharp blade until you gather multiple long, stringy fibers. Twist the fibers together tightly to form a rope then fold the rope over and twist again. Dip the twisted fiber in beeswax, wipe of excess then allow it to dry.

Create a Stem Pen

If you’ve got left-over stalks from a recent harvest, turn them into one-of-a-kind stem pens that are sure to be the envy of all your stoner classmates. To make a stem pen, you’ll need a drill press, a few fatty stalks, sand paper and basic pen kit which can be found online or at a local craft store.

Craft Hemp Paper

Make your own holiday cards and gift tags with hemp paper. To make it, soak ground cannabis stems and paper scraps in water overnight. After soaking, add the paper/stem soak to a blender and blend thoroughly (adding water as needed). Next, pour the pulp evenly onto a screen, or “deckle” (make your own by stretching a pair of nylon stockings over a wooden frame), then allow it to dry. Depending on the thickness of the paper and moisture of the room, this should take about 24 hours. For best results, remove the hemp paper from the deckle before it is completely dry.

Turn Them into Kabobs Skewers

Marijuana stems make for some very tasty kabobs. To use them, sharpen the end of a few long stems then soak overnight. Once prepared, use the cannabis skewers to make kabobs out of your favorite meats and veggies then grill to perfection.

Weave Baskets

Make your own basket out of old marijuana stems. To keep them from breaking while you’re weaving, soak a number of long stems in water overnight. The next morning, tie a few stems together in the center using hemp rope then use the remaining stems to weave between the base stems. Extract Bubble Hash

Bubble hash is a solvent-less hash that is made by washing the resin off of marijuana plants with ice cold water. The resin is filtered through special bags resulting in a pure, potent hash that can be smoked, vaporized or otherwise consumed. Bubble hash can be made using buds, shake or (you guessed it) stems.

PSA: Don’t Smoke Those Stems

These are crazy times, so it’s not that weird that you’re looking at your bowl of weed stems and contemplating smoking them. Waste not, want not, right?

As nice as it is to reduce waste and be resourceful, smoking stems isn’t the way to go.

If stems are all you have left, then you’ve already smoked the good stuff.

Stems contain almost no THC. What little may be in there doesn’t even come close to being enough to produce a high.

The negligible amount of THC in stems isn’t worth the unpleasant effects and risk to your lungs that come with smoking.

Inhaling smoke harms your lungs. It doesn’t matter if it’s bud, seed, tobacco, or burning wood. Toxins and carcinogens (cancer-causing agents) are released from the combustion of materials, even stems. This damages your lungs and increases your risk for cancer and heart and lung diseases.

Smoke effects aside, smoking stems can cause:

  • a raging headache
  • a sore throat
  • coughing

It’ll also taste like you’re smoking wood chips.

Some people on Reddit and other forums who admit to having smoked weed stems also reported uncomfortable gastrointestinal symptoms, like nausea and abdominal pain.

Nope. You shouldn’t smoke those either.

Marijuana seeds aren’t going to get you high no matter how many you crush and smoke. There’s just not enough THC in the seeds to produce any effects.

Lighting them up will create a lot of snap, crackle, and pop. The acrid smoke will irritate your throat and damage your lungs like other smoke. But that’s about it.

Stems and seeds aren’t worth smoking, but that doesn’t mean they’re entirely useless. You may be able to use lingering stems and seeds. Exactly what you can do with them depends on how many you have.

If you just have a few seeds kicking around, you could plant them and try growing your own stash (if you live in an area where this is permitted, of course).

Brew some stem tea

Before getting your brew on, you’ll want to bake the stems on a baking sheet in the oven for around 45 minutes at 225°F (107°C). When done, let the stems cool, and then grind them up.

Put your ground stems in a tea diffuser and let them steep in boiling water for 10 to 15 minutes. If you don’t have a diffuser, you can steep your ground stems in a pot of boiling water and then place a coffee filter over your mug and pour so it strains your brew.

Make stem butter

Who doesn’t like butter?

Just like when making tea from weed stems, you’ll want to bake your stems in the oven at 225°F (107°C) for 45 minutes and let them cool before grinding.

Place some butter in a pan and melt over low heat. Once the butter’s completely melted, add the ground stems and let simmer for around 30 minutes, stirring often.

To strain it, cheesecloth works best. Just secure the cheesecloth over a glass jar with a rubber band, and slowly pour the butter over the cloth. Let the butter cool and — voilà — stem butter!

It might be tempting to smoke all those stems that are gathering dust in your jar, but you may want to think twice before lighting up.
